In a surprising announcement, Nova Launcher, one of the most beloved third-party launchers for Android, is officially shutting down, leaving its dedicated user base in shock. Kevin Barry, the founder and original developer of the app, shared the news in a blog post on September 6, revealing that he has departed from Branch, the company that acquired Nova Launcher in 2022. Since the acquisition, Nova Launcher initially introduced some innovative features powered by user analytics. However, with significant layoffs affecting over a hundred employees by 2024, it became clear that the company's commitment to the app had waned. Barry, now the sole remaining developer, noted that the launcher has not seen an update in approximately 1.5 years, with the last one released in May 2024. In his blog post, Barry expressed his intention to open source Nova Launcher, detailing the necessary preparations such as cleaning up the codebase and coordinating with legal teams. He emphasized that when Branch acquired Nova, they publicly committed to open sourcing the code if he ever left the company. Unfortunately, Barry revealed that he had been instructed by Branch to cease his work on both the launcher and the open sourcing initiative. The news has sparked a wave of nostalgia and disappointment on platforms like Reddit, where users lamented the loss of their favorite launcher. Many voiced their disbelief at how a successful product could be allowed to fade away. "What I don't understand is why buy something successful and then let it die?" one user questioned, echoing the sentiments of many. Another user reminisced, stating, "Nova Launcher is arguably the best launcher over the past decade. I bought it the day after the prime version launched and it remains one of my favorite purchases of all time." As the app remains available on the Play Store, the lack of future updates means that users will soon need to explore alternative options. The community's outpouring of support for Nova Launcher highlights the impact it had on Android users, making its untimely shutdown a significant loss in the world of mobile customization.
