Sheena Leven, the founder of CodeSee, gained invaluable insights while establishing her first company. One key takeaway was understanding the distinction between genuine business needs and what merely sounds innovative. Another lesson emphasized that core principles remain essential, even with groundbreaking technologies like AI. "Security, compliance, reliability, and quality are still paramount for enterprise applications," she noted. Following CodeSee's acquisition in 2024, Leven set out to create a solution enabling business owners—regardless of their technical expertise—to develop AI applications. Collaborating with AI researcher Sean Robinson, the duo launched Empromptu last October. This innovative service allows businesses to easily create AI applications by simply communicating their requirements to an AI chatbot, which then generates the desired output, such as an HTML or JavaScript app. In addition to generating apps, Empromptu offers tools based on large language models (LLMs) that assist users in refining their results. It also enables companies to incorporate AI features into their existing software. While Leven acknowledges the rise of so-called vibe-coding platforms, which facilitate quick prototypes, she asserts that Empromptu focuses on transforming those initial ideas into fully-functional software. "Vibe coding is great for brainstorming, but Empromptu is about the actual build," she explained. On Tuesday, the company announced it had successfully raised $2 million during a pre-seed funding round led by Precursor Ventures, with participation from Zeal Capital, Alumni Ventures, Founders Edge, and South Loop. Leven indicated that the funds would be allocated towards hiring new talent and advancing proprietary technology. Empromptu aims to cater to businesses operating in regulated sectors or intricate fields that require sophisticated data management and application development, such as software for the hospitality industry. Leven envisions a future where founders can revolutionize their businesses without needing extensive technical training. "Learning this skill is akin to mastering any other," she remarked. "The beauty of it is that AI can guide you on that journey."
