In today's tech-driven world, the potential of artificial intelligence is reshaping creativity, especially for the younger generation. My 11-year-old son, recently diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, and dysgraphia, has discovered this potential firsthand by utilizing AI tools to create his very own video game. After gifting him a new computer last Christmas, we ventured into the world of AI together, first using it for research on hurricanes for a school project. The experience was enlightening for him; the ability to engage with AI and ask questions transformed his understanding of the subject matter. Weeks later, I stumbled upon him engrossed in his computer, crafting a video game with the assistance of AI. The simplicity and accessibility of AI tools ignited his creativity, allowing him to express ideas without needing extensive coding knowledge. This experience exemplifies how AI can enhance human creativity rather than diminish it. My son often browses the gaming platform Steam, where he found inspiration from a civilization-building game that resonated with a book he read in school. He began posing questions to Copilot, such as, "Help me build this game. Here’s my idea. How can I make this a reality?" What followed was a collaborative process, walking him through the necessary steps to bring his vision to life. He dedicated about four days, working one to two hours each day, before developing a playable version. One of his favorite aspects of working with AI is its patience; it never shows frustration when he asks for clarification. He enjoys prompts like, "What does this mean?" especially when faced with error codes. If something is too complex, he simply asks for a simpler explanation. Despite the exciting journey, there are challenges. Occasionally, he encounters persistent errors that neither he nor the AI can resolve. In these moments, he learns to adapt, creatively changing elements of the game to avoid crashes, such as replacing rats with smiley faces. This trial-and-error process is part of his learning experience. While I feel confident that the game he is building is low-risk, I do ponder the broader implications of his online explorations. As a parent, I question whether I’ve implemented adequate parental controls to shield him from potentially inappropriate content. Yet, the game was born from his imagination, facilitated by AI, which he could not have created on his own due to his coding limitations. The positive reinforcement he receives from his accomplishments is invaluable. I believe that educational institutions need to embrace AI and teach children how to leverage it effectively. Conversations with friends outside of the tech industry reveal that AI is being utilized in various aspects of life, from job preparation to everyday inquiries. As AI continues to evolve rapidly, it’s imperative that we equip our children with the necessary skills to navigate this landscape. When I asked my son about future projects, his eyes lit up with excitement, proving that AI can indeed amplify creativity and foster innovation among young minds.
