In a bold prediction fueled by advancements in artificial intelligence, Sam Altman and a group of tech CEOs are wagering on when the first billion-dollar company founded by a single individual will emerge. This once far-fetched concept is becoming increasingly viable, thanks in part to the rise of AI-driven startups. At the forefront of this movement is Birk Jernström, the CEO of Polar, a groundbreaking monetization platform designed to support solo entrepreneurs in their quest to achieve unicorn status. Polar aims to differentiate itself from other payment infrastructure services by prioritizing the unique needs of developers. By acting as the 'Merchant of Record,' Polar simplifies the process of handling billing and taxes, enabling businesses to launch and sell online products and SaaS subscriptions globally from their very first day. With just a few lines of code, Polar can be seamlessly integrated, an approach that resonated with Accel, the venture capital firm that led Polar’s impressive $10 million seed funding round. “There is a new generation of AI-native, early-stage businesses that want to grow without distractions,” remarked Accel partner Andrei Brasoveanu, highlighting the potential of solo ventures in the tech landscape. Jernström, who previously co-founded Tictail—a platform acquired by Shopify in 2018 for $17 million—brings valuable experience to this endeavor. Tictail was launched with the vision of making online selling as simple as blogging and quickly attracted over 100,000 merchants. Recognizing the challenges faced by small merchants, Tictail expanded into a marketplace, ultimately becoming a target for Shopify, which had outgrown its competitors. After the acquisition, Jernström joined Shopify’s Shop team, contributing to the development of the Shop app and Shop Pay ecosystem from the ground up. However, in 2021, as he prepared for fatherhood, Jernström took a step back for self-reflection, which led to his departure from Shopify and the birth of Polar. The split was amicable; both Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and President Harley Finkelstein are now supporters of Polar as angel investors. Jernström carries forward the ‘merchant-obsessed’ culture he embraced at Shopify, personally engaging with customers and addressing support inquiries daily. Since its launch in September 2024, Polar has rapidly attracted 18,000 customers, primarily developers monetizing their software. The startup's cap table is impressive, featuring entrepreneurs behind popular developer tools, including Framer and Raycast, with which Polar integrates. Supported by these connections, Jernström aims to simplify the business-building process for developers, akin to how platforms like Supabase and Vercel streamline software development. This mission resonates deeply with Jernström, who grew up with an entrepreneurial mother and has been a developer since his teenage years. He envisions Polar as a catalyst for empowering developers to pursue their passions and build independent businesses, echoing Tictail’s legacy of uplifting smaller players in the market.
