Lewis Dickson, a 78-year-old retiree and former technology consultant, is redefining the narrative around aging and technology. With a rich background in the tech industry, including a stint at IBM in the late 1970s and consulting for a Fortune 500 company until 2024, Lewis has seamlessly transitioned into a semi-retirement filled with innovation and exploration in the AI space. Upon discovering vibe coding several months ago, he was eager to dive in. "I needed to try this out," he recalls, having researched platforms like Emergent which offered a comprehensive solution without the need for extensive technical setups. Starting with simple projects, Lewis has developed over a dozen vibe-coded applications, including a sophisticated app for an AED company that integrates their camera provider's data and an AI voice assistant that retrieves real-time AED status. The CEO of the AED company was thrilled with the demo, showcasing how technology can bridge gaps in communication and efficiency. Lewis reflects on the common stereotype that older individuals are out of touch with current technologies. His journey from using Morse code as a young ham radio operator to engaging with AI illustrates his passion for both hardware and software. "There's a misconception that older people lack the skills to adapt to new technologies," he explains. However, he believes that the experience older adults bring allows them to leverage AI in ways that are strategic, not just technical. Lewis finds joy and purpose in staying active within the tech community, constantly learning and utilizing AI to teach other seniors. In a recent class, he engaged seniors in discussions about data centers and AI fundamentals. One of his students, a 100-year-old named Sue, sparked a fascinating dialogue by asking about semiconductors. Recognizing the need for accessible information, Lewis created an educational video detailing the evolution of technology from tubes to transistors, making the subject relatable. The seniors he teaches are not only learning about AI but are also applying their knowledge to real-life situations. They've taken over their community newsletter, using AI to generate content and images, as well as employing AI tools for shopping and plant identification. Lewis’s mission is clear: to show that age is no barrier to embracing technology and that with the right guidance, seniors can thrive in the digital age.
