
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has made headlines by organizing what it claims to be the largest AI hackathon in the world aimed specifically at students without a coding or engineering background. This innovative event attracted over 10,000 participants from diverse fields across India, breaking traditional barriers in technology engagement. Over the course of six weeks, students from various disciplines—including Arts, Commerce, Nursing, Agriculture, Criminology, and Law—took part in satellite editions of the AI Hackathon hosted in 22 colleges across 10 states. Utilizing voice-first AI tools in nine Indian languages, participants tackled real-world challenges relevant to their fields, with many developing prototypes within a tight timeframe of 90 to 120 minutes. This initiative serves as part of TCS's broader mission to enhance digital access and inspire non-technical students to engage with artificial intelligence. As industries increasingly seek AI-enabled skills, TCS recognizes the importance of building a workforce ready to meet these demands. Following the regional events, TCS is set to host the flagship Tata Bharat YUVAi Hackathon at the India AI Impact Summit, which will gather nearly 2,000 students. Attendees will benefit from real-time progress visualization and AI-enhanced evaluation, allowing participants to showcase their prototypes to industry leaders and dignitaries. "You don't need a computer science degree to build software—just curiosity and AI," noted Ashok Krish, VP and Head of AI Practice at TCS. He emphasized that the hackathon provides an opportunity for students from any background to create something tangible in their native language, bridging the skills gap and fostering digital entrepreneurship. The program aims to reach a significant segment of India's student population that often lacks access to formal technology education. With 62% of Indian undergraduates enrolled in Arts, Science, and Commerce, and only 10–12% fluent in English, the hackathon's multilingual approach and focus on hands-on experience allow participants to transition from problem identification to application development in just one session. Since January 2026, TCS has conducted satellite editions in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. These events have not only tested the program on a large scale but also helped establish a nationwide mentor network to support the flagship event and future initiatives. TCS envisions this initiative as a continuous national effort to transition students from domain experts into technology creators, thereby contributing to a digitally skilled workforce and bolstering India’s global standing in the digital economy.
