Effective today, October 1, Emirates Airlines has instituted a ban on the use of certain power banks during flights. Passengers will no longer be permitted to charge their devices, including mobile phones and laptops, using these power banks while on board. Additionally, charging power banks using the aircraft's power outlets is also prohibited. Under the updated regulations, travelers may bring only one power bank onboard, but its use is strictly limited. According to Emirates, the new policy aims to enhance safety measures following a thorough review. The airline indicated that the rising prevalence of power bank usage has led to an increase in incidents linked to lithium batteries within the aviation sector. Emirates highlighted the dangers associated with power banks, particularly the risk of thermal runaway. This condition occurs when a battery cell generates heat beyond its capacity to dissipate, resulting in a rapid and uncontrollable rise in temperature. Such scenarios can lead to catastrophic consequences, including fires, explosions, and the emission of harmful gases. The airline asserts that this precautionary measure is a proactive step towards ensuring passenger safety. With these restrictions in place, Emirates aims to significantly mitigate the risks tied to power bank usage in-flight.
