ChatGPT faces rising competition as Gemini and Grok gain ground, says new AI report

The landscape of consumer AI is shifting rapidly, as a recent report from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) indicates that ChatGPT is facing intensified competition from Google's Gemini and Elon Musk's xAI chatbot, Grok. The report outlines a two-and-a-half-year trend of changing consumer preferences in AI tools, showcasing how newer contenders are gaining ground against established services. Among the key findings, the report highlights 14 companies that consistently rank as the most utilized AI applications, including notable names like Perplexity, Character AI, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, and Hugging Face. These platforms serve diverse functions ranging from general assistance and image editing to voice generation and productivity enhancement. For the first time, Google has made significant strides, securing four entries on the list with products such as Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs. This marks a notable shift, as these tools now have distinct domains, allowing their individual growth to be monitored. Gemini has emerged as the most formidable competitor to ChatGPT, ranking as the second most popular AI app across both mobile and web platforms, albeit with almost half the monthly active users of OpenAI’s flagship product. Interestingly, on Android devices, Gemini boasts nearly 90% of its active user base. In contrast, Grok has secured the fourth position on the web and 23rd on mobile, despite lacking a dedicated app until late 2024. Following the launch of Grok 4 in July, it has seen a remarkable increase, now surpassing 20 million monthly active users. While Meta AI made a brief appearance on the list, it trailed at 46th on the web and did not appear in the top mobile rankings, primarily due to privacy concerns. Chinese developers are also making their mark, with ByteDance’s Doubao ranking fourth on mobile, and Moonshot AI’s Kimi alongside Alibaba’s Quark making the web's top 20. Overall, 22 of the top 50 mobile AI applications hail from China, although only three are primarily used within the domestic market. The report also shines a light on emerging startups such as Replit and Lovable, which have gained recognition for their innovative AI-powered coding tools. Furthermore, the recent app store crackdowns on ChatGPT clones have allowed more original products to flourish. Despite facing an increasingly crowded marketplace, ChatGPT maintains its global lead. However, as the findings from Andreessen Horowitz illustrate, the rapid ascension of Gemini and Grok signifies a fragmentation in the market, with several players contending for consumer attention.
