Vibe coding startup Emergent has raised $70 million, led by Khosla and SoftBank

Gone are the days when developing a complex application required a skilled team of developers. Thanks to advancements in AI, even individuals with no programming expertise can now create high-quality apps from scratch. Emergent, a burgeoning 'vibe coding' platform emerging from Y Combinator's 2024 batch, has rapidly gained traction, attracting 5 million users and witnessing a remarkable increase in annual recurring revenue from $50 million to $5 million in just over a year. Recently, the company secured $70 million in Series B funding, primarily from Khosla Ventures and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with additional investments from Prosus, Lightspeed, Together, and Y Combinator. While the company's valuation remains undisclosed, Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, emphasized the unique market opportunity Emergent is seizing. He stated, "When barriers to software creation fall this quickly, behavior changes across industries, not just within the technology sector. Emergent is at the forefront of shaping how software will be created and monetized over the next decade." In a reflection of the rapid fundraising environment for top AI companies, Emergent had previously raised $23 million in Series A funding just three months ago. CEO Mukund Jha highlighted the significant market demand for fast, affordable, and quality software options. He noted, "The product is resonating with users, leading to explosive growth." With individual subscriptions priced at $17 per month and Pro accounts at $167 per month, it's noteworthy that 80% of Emergent's users have never encountered a single line of code. Many of these users are small business owners, like a factory manager in Mexico who successfully developed a management system for his plant, utilized daily by 500 workers. Jha shared, "They were able to create this whole setup on their own." Additionally, a microbiologist utilized Emergent to craft a novel audiobook experience by importing voices from ElevenLabs. However, the vibe coding landscape is competitive, with players like Lovable, a Swedish app that recently raised $330 million at a staggering $6.6 billion valuation, and Replit, which is reportedly eyeing a $9 billion valuation for its upcoming funding. Addressing the competition, Jha remarked, "Many other platforms excel at prototyping and demos, but when it comes to managing the entire software development lifecycle, they fall short. That's the gap we aim to fill."
