Anduril’s Palmer Luckey thinks the future of tech is in the past

At CES on Wednesday, a fascinating dialogue unfolded between Palmer Luckey, the visionary behind Oculus and now the head of defense contractor Anduril, and Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit. Their conversation centered on a shared sentiment of 'tech nostalgia,' expressing a longing for the simpler, more aesthetically pleasing technology of yesteryear. Both speakers conveyed that their nostalgia wasn't a critique of technological advancement itself. Luckey, while expressing support for AI's transformative role in modern workflows, noted a significant shift in the design and style of consumer technology. They argued that older tech products often boasted superior aesthetics and functionality. Ohanian highlighted the objective quality of vintage items, stating, "It’s not just about nostalgia for the old; it’s about the fact that it’s just objectively better." Luckey passionately reminisced about classic video games, specifically praising the 1999 first-person shooter Quake: Arena. He lamented the loss of intentionality in curating music collections in the digital age, emphasizing how the act of building physical music libraries or mixtapes has been diminished by the overwhelming availability of digital downloads. Interestingly, the duo pointed out that even younger generations, who have no personal ties to the past, are drawn to retro aesthetics. Luckey remarked, "Why do they think it’s good? It’s not because they’re remembering their childhoods... it’s because they’re recognizing that it is literally better, some of this old stuff." Their observations align with current consumer trends, as nostalgia gains traction in various sectors, particularly in tech. Young people are increasingly attracted to physical media, such as vinyl and cassettes, as well as retro-styled devices. This surge in interest suggests that Luckey and Ohanian's appreciation for vintage technology might not just be personal but also a savvy business insight in a market flooded with modern digital products. Luckey has already tapped into this nostalgic market with his 2024 launch of the ModRetro Chromatic, a retro gaming device reminiscent of the Game Boy, priced at $199. Ohanian showcased one of these devices during their talk, reflecting his own enthusiasm for vintage-style gaming. In a light-hearted moment, Luckey revealed that he had attended CES since he was 16, humorously admitting to using a fake ID to gain entry. Despite their focus on nostalgia, the conversation took a turn toward more serious topics as Luckey addressed his defense company’s trajectory. Anduril, which has recently reached a valuation of $30.5 billion following a Series G funding round, is currently collaborating with Meta on military headset technology. Luckey made a striking comment regarding geopolitics, reflecting on his past reliance on Chinese manufacturing and emphasizing the complex dynamics between the U.S. and China, stating, "It's a messy divorce - and if people think that it’s going to end with reconciliation, they’re blind. It’s not."
