Harvey's CEO tells BI: Don't sleep on junior lawyers in the age of AI

In a recent interview, Winston Weinberg, CEO of the innovative legal AI startup Harvey, emphasized the importance of junior lawyers in a rapidly evolving legal landscape dominated by artificial intelligence. Speaking at the TechLaw Fest in Singapore, Weinberg expressed his unwavering commitment to recruiting and nurturing young legal talent, stating, 'I'm 100% committed to hiring and training young lawyers.' Weinberg noted that junior lawyers are often more adaptable and willing to embrace new technologies. 'The younger you are, usually the more agile you are at adopting a new playbook and figuring it out,' he explained. This fluency with AI tools could even allow younger lawyers to outpace seasoned partners in terms of both technology and adaptability. Highlighting the unique opportunities for growth, Weinberg remarked that young lawyers often engage in higher-risk tasks earlier in their careers, which can significantly accelerate their development. 'If you're scared of something and stressed about doing something, do it and lean into doing it,' he advised, suggesting that less stress leads to better performance. Harvey, which has rapidly expanded to 340 employees in just three years, actively hires junior lawyers in every new market, including recent openings in Australia and the UK. With plans to onboard around 15 new employees in its Sydney office this year, the company is positioning itself as a leader in integrating young talent into the industry. Amid concerns about AI diminishing the traditional apprenticeship model for junior lawyers, Weinberg sees AI as a transformative force that is reshaping the legal industry. While some areas may shrink, new practice areas are emerging. He believes law firms need to prioritize the training and upskilling of junior attorneys to harness the potential of AI effectively. 'AI systems can do the work, but there's no reason you can't turn those into education platforms,' he stated. Moreover, Weinberg pointed out that AI could empower junior attorneys to establish their own practices, fostering a new generation of legal entrepreneurs. This shift is reflected in recent trends, with an increasing number of law school graduates opting for roles in tech startups rather than traditional law firms. As noted in an American Bar Association survey, more than 6% of the 2024 graduating class has already chosen to pursue opportunities outside of traditional legal paths, indicating a significant shift in career perceptions. Omar Haroun, a legal-tech startup founder, reflected on this trend, stating that what was once viewed as a potential career setback is now seen as a pathway to career enhancement. The legal profession is evolving, and young lawyers are at the forefront of this change, ready to shape the future of the industry.
