‘Not built right the first time’ — Musk’s xAI is starting over again, again

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is undergoing a significant overhaul as it strives to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI development. Originally established with 11 co-founders three years ago, the team has now dwindled to just two remaining members as the company seeks to redefine its strategy. Musk revealed that this restructuring is intentional, stating, "xAI was not built right the first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up." Recent departures, including co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang, reflect the challenges xAI faces in competing with established AI coding tools like Claude Code from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI. Musk emphasized the urgency of an internal meeting aimed at strategizing how to close the gap with these rivals, with hopes of achieving significant progress by mid-year. The pressure is palpable, as coding tools are critical revenue streams for AI companies, making xAI’s current struggles a serious business concern. The shakeup at xAI goes beyond recent exits. Last month, 11 senior engineers, including two co-founders, left amid Musk's plans for a larger reorganization. Reports indicate that executives from Musk's other ventures, SpaceX and Tesla, have begun assessing employees at xAI, leading to further layoffs of those who do not meet performance expectations. With only two co-founders, Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen, alongside Musk, the task ahead remains daunting. In an effort to bolster its workforce, Musk is revisiting previous job applications to reach out to potential candidates who may have been overlooked. He acknowledged the situation on social media, apologizing to those who had been left in the dark regarding their applications. Currently, xAI's workforce stands at just over 5,000, significantly lower than OpenAI's 7,500-plus employees and Anthropic's nearly 4,700. Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, previously of the AI coding tool company Cursor, join xAI. Their arrival may indicate the importance of direct access to large language models and computational resources, which could enhance xAI's standing in the market. As xAI operates under the SpaceX umbrella, there is mounting pressure to demonstrate substantial progress on Grok, its large language model, especially with a public offering on the horizon. Musk’s ambitions extend beyond coding tools, as he envisions the Macrohard project, which aims to create an AI capable of performing any task typical of a white-collar worker. However, early leadership changes in this project have caused delays, and it has now been revealed as a collaborative effort with Tesla on another AI project dubbed "Digital Optimus." This vision aligns with ongoing developments in the AI field, such as those from Perplexity and OpenAI, which are also working on creating digital agents to enhance productivity. As Musk presses forward, the journey of xAI remains closely watched amid significant industry competition.
