Elon Musk is intensifying his competition against AI leaders Anthropic and OpenAI with new strategic partnerships. Recent talks have taken place between Musk's AI firm, xAI, and two other notable entities, Mistral and the coding startup Cursor, regarding a potential collaboration. Founded in 2023, Mistral is a French AI startup that aims to provide an independent alternative to leading U.S. laboratories in the AI sector. In a significant development, SpaceX, the parent company of xAI, announced a deal with Cursor this week that includes the option to acquire Mistral for a staggering $60 billion. Reports indicate that Cursor has been utilizing xAI's infrastructure to train its AI models, as Musk seeks to establish a stronger foothold in the competitive landscape dominated by Anthropic and OpenAI, particularly in AI coding services and agents. Musk is advocating for closer ties with Mistral and Cursor to bolster xAI’s capabilities. Notably, Mistral's co-founder, Devendra Chaplot, recently joined xAI, where he now leads pretraining efforts after his previous experience at Thinking Machines Lab. Despite these advancements, representatives from xAI, Cursor, and Mistral have not yet commented on these developments. Launched in 2023, xAI is working to enhance its infrastructure and model performance, having quickly expanded to one of the largest data center operations in the AI sector. The company previously reported owning around 200,000 Nvidia GPUs, with plans to increase that number to 1 million. Musk has made several leadership changes within xAI, expressing concerns to his team about Anthropic's lead in the AI race. Michael Nicolls, president of xAI and a SpaceX executive, stated that the company recognizes it is "clearly behind" its competitors and needs to implement changes to catch up. Publicly, Musk has criticized Anthropic’s approach, labeling its models as "misanthropic and evil." Over the past year, Anthropic has emerged as a key player in AI, especially regarding coding tools. Earlier this year, Anthropic restricted xAI's access to its Claude AI models through Cursor’s coding tool. In a further twist, Musk, who was instrumental in founding OpenAI, is currently pursuing legal action against the organization, alleging it has deviated from its original mission as a nonprofit. He has positioned xAI as a counter to what he describes as "woke" AI, reflecting his vision for the future of artificial intelligence.
