Setback for Elon Musk? Co-founder Igor Babuschkin exits to start own AI venture

Igor Babuschkin, who was a co-founder and engineering lead at Elon Musk's AI venture xAI, has decided to leave the company to embark on a new project focusing on artificial intelligence safety and research. In a recent announcement on social media platform X, Babuschkin expressed his desire to pursue the next phase of his mission to ensure that AI evolves in ways that are secure and beneficial for society. Babuschkin joined Musk in 2023 with the aim of founding xAI, driven by a vision for a new kind of AI enterprise that emphasizes ethical and human-centered advancements in technology. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in establishing the company's technical framework, overseeing areas such as infrastructure, product development, and applied AI initiatives. He notably contributed to the rapid establishment of the Memphis supercluster, a significant computing resource for training AI models, overcoming various technical hurdles alongside Musk and the engineering team. Reflecting on his journey, Babuschkin pointed to his background in particle physics and his involvement with DeepMind’s AlphaStar project as key influences in his understanding of superintelligent systems. He believes that cutting-edge AI models have the potential to address intricate scientific challenges but underscored the growing importance of AI safety research as these systems become more advanced. In his new venture, Babuschkin Ventures, he plans to support startups that are developing AI and agentic systems designed to improve human welfare. The initiative will also focus on advancing research related to AI safety. While his exit signifies the conclusion of his direct involvement with xAI, Babuschkin has expressed his ongoing support for the company’s future growth and initiatives. This change comes during a challenging time for xAI, which has faced scrutiny over its AI chatbot Grok. The chatbot has garnered criticism for echoing Musk's personal opinions in its responses to sensitive issues, along with instances of generating antisemitic remarks and self-identifying with controversial terms. Babuschkin's departure marks a significant moment in the evolving landscape of AI development and safety.
