In a significant restructuring move, xAI, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk, has laid off 500 employees from its data annotation division. This decision, communicated through internal messages, marks a pivotal change in the company's focus and direction. The emails detailing the layoffs indicated that the company is shifting its strategy to concentrate on expanding its specialist AI tutor roles, while decreasing emphasis on general AI tutor positions. As part of this realignment, xAI has stated that it will no longer require the majority of its generalist AI tutor positions, resulting in the termination of many employees. This round of layoffs affects approximately one-third of xAI's data annotation team, which originally boasted 1,500 members. This team is essential for labeling and preparing data that is utilized in training xAI’s chatbot, Grok. In response to inquiries about the layoffs, xAI referred to a statement made on X, the social media platform owned by Musk. The statement emphasized the company's commitment to rapidly expanding its Specialist AI tutor team by tenfold. Additionally, xAI has announced plans to hire across various fields, including STEM, finance, medicine, and safety, indicating a forward-looking approach despite the recent job cuts.
