Elon Musk has a bold vision for the future of data centers, suggesting that the ultimate solution lies beyond our planet. As nations invest heavily in terrestrial data centers in an escalating quest for AI superiority, Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, believes that relocating these facilities to space could be more efficient in terms of energy usage and resource allocation. In a recent memo regarding the acquisition of his AI venture, xAI, Musk outlined plans to establish a vast network of satellites functioning as orbital data centers. Each satellite is projected to provide around 100 kW of computing power per ton, contributing an impressive 100 gigawatts of AI computing capacity each year. Despite skepticism surrounding this ambitious initiative, Musk remains resolute. He reiterated his commitment to the concept during an appearance on the Dwarkesh Podcast, predicting that within 30 to 36 months, space will emerge as the most economically viable location for AI operations. He emphasized that the benefits of operating in space would become increasingly pronounced over time. However, the plan did face scrutiny. Host Dwarkesh Patel raised concerns about the overall costs of operating data centers, noting that energy accounts for only a fraction of total expenses. Musk countered that the initiative isn't merely about cutting energy costs; it focuses on securing reliable energy sources. He pointed out that outside of China, electricity production has stagnated, raising questions about future energy availability for terrestrial data centers. Data centers are known for their substantial resource consumption, with some facilities using as much power as entire cities and millions of gallons of water daily. A recent report indicated that U.S. data centers might soon use more electricity than Poland, which has a population of 36.6 million. The number of data centers in the U.S. is projected to surge from 311 in 2010 to over 1,240 by the end of 2024. Currently, data centers account for approximately 4.4% of total U.S. electricity usage, as reported by the Department of Energy. Globally, data centers are responsible for around 1.5% of electricity consumption, according to the International Energy Agency. The demand for computing power is prompting massive investments, with a McKinsey report estimating that $6.7 trillion will be needed worldwide by 2030 to meet data center requirements. As Big Tech companies ramp up their spending—expected to reach around $600 billion by 2026—SpaceX is actively recruiting for its innovative space-based data center project. Notably, the company is looking for skilled engineers, including a position for a "Space Lasers Engineer" in Redmond, Washington. Musk's rationale for this venture is straightforward: "Space is called 'space' for a reason," he stated in the company memo. SpaceX has yet to respond to requests for further comments on this groundbreaking initiative.
