Sam Altman says Elon Musk's idea of putting data centers in space is 'ridiculous'

In a recent live interview in New Delhi, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed his doubts about Elon Musk's ambitious concept of establishing data centers in space. This discussion highlights the ongoing philosophical divide between the two tech leaders. Altman described Musk's vision as impractical given current technological and logistical challenges. "I honestly think the idea with the current landscape of putting data centers in space is ridiculous," he remarked, eliciting laughter from the audience. He acknowledged that while orbital data centers might eventually hold potential, significant hurdles remain, such as the high costs associated with launches and the complexities involved in repairing technology in space. "We are not there yet," he emphasized, noting that such developments won't be feasible at scale within this decade. Musk, on the other hand, remains undeterred. His focus on space-based data solutions has been consistent, with aspirations to create a 'constellation of a million satellites' that would serve as operational data centers. This ambition was discussed during a recent all-hands meeting at xAI, a company Musk is keen on leveraging for faster deployment of these orbital facilities. Despite Altman's skepticism, the interest in space-based data centers is gaining traction among tech giants. Google's Project Suncatcher aims to establish solar-powered data centers in orbit, with CEO Sundar Pichai suggesting that construction could begin as soon as 2027. As the demand for data centers continues to surge, concerns regarding their environmental impact persist. Many new data center projects in the U.S. face opposition from local communities, highlighting the ongoing debate over the balance between technological advancement and sustainability.
