On Monday, Elon Musk unveiled an initial version of an AI-driven encyclopedia named Grokipedia, although the launch was marred by technical difficulties that caused the website to crash temporarily. Named after xAI's advanced language model Grok, this new platform is being touted by Musk as a more objective alternative to the well-known Wikipedia. The idea for Grokipedia originated from a suggestion by David Sacks, an influential tech figure and advisor during the Trump administration on AI and cryptocurrency. Musk, known for his controversial views, has previously criticized Wikipedia as being 'woke' and has taken issue with its reliance on sources like The New York Times and NPR. In a post on social media platform X, Musk indicated that this was just 'Grokipedia version 0.1,' promising that a future 'version 1.0' would significantly improve upon it. Despite its rough start, Musk claimed that the current version already surpasses Wikipedia. Initial reports indicate that the website experienced downtime for several hours, with an archived version showing that it has accumulated nearly 885,279 articles styled similarly to those found on Wikipedia, which boasts over 7 million entries. Unlike Wikipedia, where content is collaboratively created by volunteers, Grokipedia appears to be generated entirely by AI. This launch marks another application of xAI's technology, following Grok's integration into the X platform. Musk has marketed Grok as an unbiased alternative to competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT, yet many users have pointed out that both Grok and Grokipedia frequently reference Wikipedia in their responses. A spokesperson for the Wikimedia Foundation stated that they are still determining how Grokipedia operates but noted that alternative encyclopedias have emerged in the past without disrupting Wikipedia's mission. Addressing concerns of bias, the spokesperson emphasized that Wikipedia aims to provide information to a global audience without promoting a specific viewpoint, thanks to its transparent policies and dedicated volunteer oversight. Wikipedia's co-founder, Jimmy Wales, expressed skepticism regarding Grokipedia's potential, citing concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated content. Conversely, Larry Sanger, another co-founder who has criticized Wikipedia's current leadership, showed some enthusiasm for alternatives but later highlighted inaccuracies he found in Grokipedia's content. As Grokipedia continues to evolve, the landscape of online knowledge-sharing is set for potential shifts, raising questions about the future roles of human editors in the age of AI.
