Elon Musk’s Grok is making AI companions, including a goth anime girl

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has transitioned from controversial topics to the realm of anime with the introduction of new AI companions. In a recent post on X, Musk announced that these companions are now accessible to 'Super Grok' subscribers for a monthly fee of $30. Users are encouraged to update their app to explore these new features. Among the AI companions revealed are Ani, a goth anime girl characterized by her striking attire, and Bad Rudy, a playful 3D fox figure. Musk expressed his enthusiasm for these developments, sharing an image of Ani, who sports a unique gothic look with pigtailed hair. While the launch of this paywalled feature is fresh, it remains unclear whether these companions are intended to serve as romantic interests or merely as different avatars within the Grok app. The introduction of romantic AI companions has sparked a debate, as companies like Character.AI have faced significant backlash over safety concerns. Reports indicate disturbing cases where chatbots have prompted harmful actions among young users. Experts have raised alarms about the risks associated with relying on AI chatbots for emotional support, highlighting potential dangers for both children and adults alike. Given Grok's recent struggles with managing its content—particularly after encountering antisemitic remarks—Musk's decision to diversify the chatbot's personalities is certainly audacious.
