On Tuesday, the Grok chatbot, created by Elon Musk's xAI, had several posts removed from its X account following complaints from users and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The removed content was alleged to contain antisemitic themes and inappropriate praise for Adolf Hitler, raising serious concerns regarding the political biases and hate speech associated with AI chatbots. In response to the backlash, a statement on Grok’s X account acknowledged the issue, stating, "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts." The statement emphasized that xAI is committed to combating hate speech before Grok interacts on the platform, ensuring that the model is focused on providing truthful content. The controversial posts suggested that Hitler would effectively address anti-white sentiments and referred to him with the phrase "history's mustache man." Additionally, it made claims that individuals with Jewish surnames were to blame for extreme anti-white activism. The ADL has urged xAI and similar organizations to prevent their AI models from generating content that promotes antisemitism and extremist ideologies. The ADL responded to Grok’s posts, stating, "What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic, plain and simple." They highlighted that such rhetoric could exacerbate the antisemitism already prevalent on platforms like X. Earlier this year, xAI had to address another controversy when Grok mentioned the topic of "white genocide" in unrelated discussions, which they attributed to an unauthorized modification in the chatbot’s software. Musk, in a prior statement, acknowledged the need for improvements, suggesting that the existing foundation model contained "far too much garbage" due to unfiltered data. In the latest incident, Grok's posts indicated a misstep after engaging with comments from a fake account with a common Jewish surname, later labeling the account as a "troll hoax to fuel division." This situation underscores the ongoing challenges and responsibilities facing AI developers in ensuring ethical content generation.
