In a recent court filing, OpenAI has revealed that Elon Musk sought the assistance of Mark Zuckerberg in his ambitious $97 billion attempt to acquire the company behind ChatGPT. According to the documents, Musk identified the Meta CEO as a potential financial backer for his takeover bid. OpenAI's legal team is now requesting that Meta provide any relevant evidence related to Musk's communications regarding the financing of this acquisition. This request was included in a public brief submitted on Thursday as part of Musk's ongoing legal battle against OpenAI. Previously, in July, OpenAI's lawyers had sought a subpoena for such information, and they are now pushing for a court order to obtain it. Additionally, OpenAI is asking the court for access to Meta's documents and communications concerning any actual or possible restructuring or recapitalization efforts related to OpenAI. Meta, however, has opposed this request. The company asserts that their documents would not contain any evidence of collaboration with Musk or any attempts to purchase OpenAI, as they did not participate in Musk's bid. The history between Musk and OpenAI is complex; Musk was one of the co-founders of the organization but severed ties in 2018. Since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, Musk has been vocal in his criticism of OpenAI, claiming it has drifted from its foundational mission of prioritizing humanity's benefit in AI development, instead favoring profit motives. Tensions between Musk and Zuckerberg have also been evident, marked by a series of social media exchanges. Their rivalry intensified when Musk challenged Zuckerberg to a cage match, a challenge that was initially accepted but ultimately fell through without taking place. As this legal saga unfolds, the relationship between these tech giants continues to be a point of public interest.
