In a recent court document, OpenAI revealed that Elon Musk sought to enlist Mark Zuckerberg in his ambitious attempt to acquire the AI company. The filing, submitted on Thursday, indicated that discussions took place between Musk and the Meta CEO regarding potential financial collaborations or investments in OpenAI. However, the filing clarified that neither Zuckerberg nor Meta committed to Musk's proposal. Earlier this year, Musk's legal team confirmed that he, along with a group of investors, had offered a staggering $97.6 billion to purchase the company behind ChatGPT. Ultimately, OpenAI rejected this offer. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 alongside CEO Sam Altman and others, departed from the board in 2018 due to disagreements over the company's evolving direction towards a for-profit model and its partnerships with Microsoft. Following his exit, Musk established xAI, a competing venture in the artificial intelligence space. He has since filed lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging breaches of their founding agreement and prioritizing commercial interests over public welfare, even labeling Altman as "Scam Altman" earlier this year. Tensions between Musk and Altman have escalated recently, particularly after Musk threatened legal action against Apple, claiming preferential treatment for ChatGPT in the App Store. Meanwhile, Meta has been intensifying its efforts to enhance its own large language model and chatbot, positioning them as direct competitors to ChatGPT. This summer, Meta initiated an aggressive recruitment campaign, offering enticing compensation packages of up to $100 million to attract top talent from leading AI research organizations, including OpenAI. Among Meta's notable new hires are former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Scale AI's ex-CEO Alexandr Wang, and several researchers who previously worked at OpenAI. In light of these developments, OpenAI has requested that the court compel Meta to provide documentation regarding any interactions with Musk or xAI.
