SpaceX adds longtime Elon Musk ally Roelof Botha to board

In a strategic move shortly after guiding SpaceX through a historic IPO, CEO Elon Musk has appointed Roelof Botha to the company's board of directors. Announced in a filing on Wednesday, Botha will take on the role of independent director and join the audit committee, effective immediately. This appointment marks Botha as the eighth member of SpaceX's board, which Musk chairs while also serving as CEO and head of technology. Roelof Botha has a long-standing connection with Musk, dating back to their collaboration at PayPal in the early 2000s. Since then, Botha has been a significant player at Sequoia Capital, progressing to managing director before stepping down last year. Presently, he serves as an adviser for Sequoia, contributing to both the seed and early-stage initiatives as well as growth projects. Sequoia has consistently backed Musk's ventures, having invested in companies like Neuralink and The Boring Company, as well as SpaceX itself. Their commitment began in 2019 and has since grown to a stake reportedly worth billions. Shaun Maguire, a partner at Sequoia, confirmed that as SpaceX prepared for its debut on the Nasdaq, the firm plans to distribute shares to investors if valuations exceed expectations. The recent filing did not clarify whether Botha is representing Sequoia's interests on the SpaceX board, and inquiries from both parties have yet to elicit a response. Additionally, the filing noted that Botha is connected to a SpaceX employee, though no specifics were provided. Musk maintains majority control over SpaceX, holding more than 82% of voting rights, equating to shares valued at over $1 trillion. This governance structure limits the influence of outside shareholders. Botha’s departure from his role at Sequoia occurred amid some controversy, as reports indicated internal criticism regarding his management style and a contentious defense of remarks that were deemed Islamophobic. As SpaceX continues to grow, the addition of Botha to the board signals a deepening of ties between Musk and his established allies in the venture capital landscape.
