Elon Musk has reversed course on Anthropic

In a surprising turn of events, Elon Musk has adopted a more amicable approach towards Anthropic, a company he previously criticized. The CEO of SpaceX has recently lauded Anthropic's team and their advancements in artificial intelligence, marking a significant shift from his earlier remarks that branded the company as 'hypocritical' and 'woke.' In a post on X, Musk admitted, 'I was clearly wrong about Anthropic.' He went on to acknowledge their leading position in AI, stating, 'No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable, and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon.' This comment comes after a collaborative deal announced in May, which allows Anthropic to utilize computing resources from SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center, providing them with over 300 megawatts of power, translating to more than 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. Under the agreement, Anthropic is set to pay $1.25 billion a month through May 2029 for this compute power, with a clause allowing either party to terminate the deal with 90 days' notice. This newfound respect for Anthropic contrasts sharply with Musk's previous statements that questioned their viability in the AI landscape. Earlier this year, Musk had made several disparaging comments about Anthropic, joking that their 'fate is to be misanthropic' and accusing them of large-scale data theft. He even described Anthropic as 'smug, sanctimonious and hypocritical,' claiming they harbored a bias against Western civilization. Musk's latest praise for Anthropic's achievements came in response to a user on X who suggested that SpaceX now possesses a competitive AI model. While acknowledging that Anthropic is dependent on SpaceX's compute resources, Musk reassured that he would never intentionally harm the company. 'That's not my style,' he stated. Following the partnership announcement, Musk expressed admiration for the proficiency and intentions of the Anthropic team, noting that they are committed to ensuring their AI, Claude, benefits humanity. However, he remains aware of the competitive landscape, reminding followers that SpaceX AI is still in its infancy compared to Anthropic and OpenAI. 'Let's see where things stand three years from now,' he concluded, hinting at the ongoing rivalry in the AI sector.
