Elon Musk says xAI missed talented candidates — so he's reopening the résumé stack

In a bid to strengthen his AI startup xAI, Elon Musk has announced plans to revisit previous job applications as he faces a wave of departures among top executives. In a recent post on X, Musk expressed regret over not recognizing the potential of numerous candidates who were overlooked during the hiring process. Accompanied by Baris Akis from the xAI talent engineering team, Musk revealed that they will be reviewing the interview records to reconnect with promising individuals. This initiative comes at a crucial time as the company has seen significant turnover, with cofounders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang recently announcing their exits. Their departures follow a string of resignations from xAI's founding team that includes notable names like Toby Pohlen, Jimmy Ba, Tony Wu, and Greg Yang, marking a turbulent period for the startup. Founded in 2023 with the intention of competing against established players like OpenAI and Google, xAI has faced numerous challenges. With Dai and Zhang's exits, only two of the original eleven cofounders will remain: Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen. Musk previously acknowledged that the structure of xAI was flawed initially and has initiated a comprehensive rebuild of the company from the ground up. During a recent appearance at the Abundance Summit, Musk admitted that xAI’s product, Grok, is falling behind in development, stating he has been heavily involved in the coding process to catch up with competitors. Musk’s ambitious plans also include SpaceX’s acquisition of xAI, announced earlier this year, further intertwining his ventures in technology and space exploration.
