Staff complain that xAI is flailing because of constant upheaval

In a significant shake-up at xAI, Elon Musk has implemented another round of job reductions following dissatisfaction with the company's coding product performance. This latest move has resulted in the departure of several cofounders and the introduction of experienced 'fixers' from SpaceX and Tesla, tasked with evaluating the startup's operations. This overhaul comes as xAI, just two years old, attempts to catch up with industry leaders such as Anthropic and OpenAI, whose innovative AI coding tools have disrupted the software landscape. Musk's intensifying pressure aligns with a recent $1.25 billion merger between SpaceX and xAI, as he works toward a June target that could culminate in the largest stock market listing to date. Musk has articulated ambitious goals for xAI, envisioning the launch of AI data centers in space, the establishment of factories on the Moon, and even the colonization of Mars. However, despite his relentless drive, xAI's Grok chatbot and coding tools have struggled to attract a user base among both individual consumers and businesses. In a post on X, Musk remarked, "xAI was not built right the first time around, so it is being rebuilt from the foundations up. The same thing happened with Tesla." Meanwhile, SpaceX and Tesla management have been reassigned to assess the work of xAI staff members, leading to the termination of some employees deemed to be underperforming. A key focus of this review has been the quality of the training data utilized for the models, which has been identified as a primary factor in the coding product's inability to compete with offerings like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. As part of the restructuring, two additional cofounders have exited the company, including Zihang Dai, a senior technical staff member who openly recognized xAI's struggles with coding. Another cofounder, Guodong Zhang, announced his departure after facing blame for the coding product's shortcomings and having his responsibilities reassigned by Musk, confirming that his last day was on Thursday.
