Elon Musk unveils new company 'Macrohard' to replicate Microsoft with AI

In a bold move, Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced a new venture named Macrohard, aimed at competing directly with Microsoft in the software sector while harnessing the capabilities of artificial intelligence. Musk took to X to clarify that although the name is meant to be humorous, the initiative is serious and well-founded. Musk emphasized the feasibility of creating a software entity that mirrors existing companies like Microsoft, which do not produce physical hardware. He stated, "Given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI." Reports indicate that Musk's xAI submitted a patent application for 'Macrohard' to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on August 1. The application outlines several AI-centric services that Macrohard might offer, such as software for generating human-like speech and text, as well as tools for designing and developing video games with AI support. Last month, Musk hinted at the ambitious scope of xAI's new AI software company, mentioning that it would create multiple specialized agents for coding and image/video generation. These agents would work in concert to replicate human interactions within virtual environments, striving for exceptional results. Musk acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, "This is a macro challenge and a hard problem with stiff competition! Can you guess the name of this company?" His relationship with Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella has been tumultuous, as Musk has criticized the tech giant in various contexts, including a lawsuit against OpenAI. Despite their rocky interactions, Musk and Nadella have engaged in public discussions about AI, particularly when Musk's Grok 3 models were integrated into Microsoft's Azure AI platform. Musk has also issued warnings about the competitive landscape, suggesting that OpenAI could overshadow Microsoft. Looking ahead, Musk is set to unveil the Grok 5 model by the end of the year, while maintaining that Grok 4 remains superior to its rivals. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to integrate OpenAI's models into its services, including the popular Copilot features across various platforms.
