Elon Musk pauses changes to X’s creator revenue-sharing program after backlash

In a surprising turn of events, the social media platform X has quickly reversed its recent proposal concerning new monetization strategies for its creators. The plan had aimed to adjust payout structures based on engagement metrics from a creator’s local audience. On Tuesday evening, Nikita Bier, the Head of Product at X, announced the intended policy shift, which was set to take effect on Thursday. Bier explained that the adjustments were designed to discourage creators from manipulating the algorithm by focusing their content on larger audiences, such as those in the U.S. and Japan. "We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, neighboring countries, and those who speak your language," Bier stated on the platform. He expressed a desire to foster diverse conversations and local engagement, rather than simply appealing to broader, more populous countries. However, this announcement faced immediate backlash from the global user base. Many creators who produce content in various languages, including English, felt that their outreach strategies were being unfairly targeted, as they often seek broader readership due to limited engagement within their home countries. Responding to the uproar, Elon Musk intervened just hours later, indicating that the company would “pause moving forward with this until further consideration,” effectively halting the implementation of the changes. X has a history of modifying its platform to address misinformation, including recent updates that require users to disclose their country or region in their profiles. This initiative aimed to help users determine the credibility of accounts and prevent the spread of misleading information, especially concerning political issues. Although the proposed payout changes were intended to root out misinformation, they risked penalizing a wide array of content creators outside of just political commentary, impacting those discussing sports, fashion, movies, and technology. Earlier this year, X revised its policies to include a provision that would prohibit creators from receiving payouts for 90 days if they used AI-generated content to disseminate misleading information about conflict situations without proper disclosures. The platform has committed to using its AI tools alongside community contributions to identify and manage such content effectively. Recent reports have highlighted X as a breeding ground for misinformation, particularly during sensitive geopolitical events, where AI-generated videos and misleading clips have been mistaken for genuine war footage.
