X office raided in France’s Grok probe; Elon Musk summoned for questioning

In a dramatic turn of events, French law enforcement officials have conducted a raid on X’s office located in Paris, prompting the summoning of Elon Musk for questioning. This action is part of an extensive investigation into the platform's involvement with illegal content. The Paris public prosecutor's office has revealed that the investigation, which has been ongoing for a year, was recently expanded due to alarming reports that the Grok chatbot was propagating Holocaust denial and sexually explicit deepfakes. Europol is collaborating with the French authorities, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. They have stated that the inquiry delves into various suspected criminal activities tied to the operation and utilization of the platform, particularly focusing on the spread of illegal content and other forms of online crime. To bolster the investigation, Europol’s cybercrime center has deployed an analyst to assist local law enforcement on-site in Paris. The French Gendarmerie’s cybercrime unit is also involved in this multifaceted investigation. Authorities are particularly interested in interviewing both Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X, who left her position amid controversy surrounding Grok's remarks about Hitler. Although the interviews are characterized as voluntary, prosecutors have formally summoned them for discussions in April 2026. The Paris public prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, has indicated that the inquiry encompasses a variety of potential offenses. These include complicity in the possession and distribution of child pornography, violation of personal image rights through sexual deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, fraudulent data extraction from automated systems, falsification of automated system operations, and the management of an illegal online platform by an organized group. In response to the investigation, X has previously criticized the actions taken by French authorities, alleging in July 2025 that the probe represents a politically motivated investigation that endangers users' rights to privacy and free speech. As the situation unfolds, further comments from X will be awaited to shed more light on their stance regarding these serious allegations.
