Elon Musk says Tesla expects to increase its human workforce as AI and robotics boost productivity

In a surprising twist amidst widespread layoffs across various industries, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced plans to expand his workforce. Speaking at the Abundance Summit, Musk emphasized that Tesla will not be reducing its personnel but instead aims to increase its headcount, even as many companies cut jobs due to advancements in artificial intelligence. Musk's comments come at a time when numerous firms are downsizing their teams in response to the evolving capabilities of AI. For instance, Atlassian recently revealed it would eliminate 10% of its workforce to invest in AI technologies, while Block, co-founded by Jack Dorsey, laid off 4,000 employees, approximately 40% of its staff, citing AI as the primary factor. Despite the trend of automation leading to job cuts, Musk remains optimistic about Tesla's employment future. He noted, "We're not planning any layoffs or reductions in personnel. In fact, we will increase our headcount. But the output per human at Tesla is going to get nutty high." This optimism is bolstered by Tesla's investments in robotics, particularly the development of Optimus, a humanoid robot designed to take on manufacturing tasks. Musk has long argued that advancements in robotics could lead to the elimination of traditional jobs, suggesting that a universal basic income might become necessary as robots significantly increase the production of goods and services. He stated, "We'll basically just issue money to people because the output of goods and services will so far exceed the money supply that we'll effectively have deflation." As the automotive industry, including Tesla, continues to invest in robotics, companies are increasingly looking to these technologies to address labor shortages, particularly for jobs that involve repetitive physical tasks. However, a spokesperson for Tesla did not provide any further comments regarding these developments.
