With co-founders leaving and an IPO looming, Elon Musk turns talk to the moon

In a recent all-hands meeting at xAI, Elon Musk shared ambitious plans for the future of his AI company, specifically focusing on establishing a manufacturing facility on the moon. According to reports from The New York Times, Musk emphasized the need for a lunar factory that would produce AI satellites, launching them into space using a giant catapult. He stated, "You have to go to the moon," highlighting that this strategy could provide xAI with unparalleled computing power, surpassing all competitors. Musk expressed excitement about the potential scale of intelligence that could be developed through this endeavor, though he did not elaborate on the logistics of constructing such a facility. Furthermore, he acknowledged the current transitional phase of the company, remarking, "If you’re moving faster than anyone else in any given technology arena, you will be the leader," and expressed confidence in xAI's rapid progress. The timing of this meeting coincided with significant changes in xAI's leadership. Just a day prior, co-founder Tony Wu announced his departure, followed by another co-founder, Jimmy Ba, who also decided to leave. This marks the exit of six out of the twelve founding members, though all departures have reportedly been amicable. With a SpaceX IPO potentially targeting a staggering $1.5 trillion valuation this summer, these exits could prove financially beneficial for those involved. Musk's recent shift in focus from Mars to the moon marks a notable change for SpaceX, which has primarily aimed for Mars colonization throughout its 24-year history. Just before the Super Bowl, Musk took to social media to declare that the company is now concentrating on creating a self-sustaining city on the moon, asserting that such a project could be realized in significantly less time than a Mars colony. This change in direction has sparked investor interest, with many appearing more enthusiastic about the potential of lunar data centers than distant planetary colonies. A venture capitalist who spoke with this editor previously suggested that Musk's lunar ambitions align closely with xAI's core mission rather than distracting from it. The theory posits that Musk aims to construct the most powerful world model, leveraging data from Tesla, Neuralink, SpaceX, and the Boring Company. However, the feasibility of this vision remains uncertain, as does its legality. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits any nation or company from claiming sovereignty over the moon, yet a 2015 U.S. law allows for ownership of resources extracted from it. This legal loophole may provide a basis for Musk's lunar aspirations, but the evolving team dynamics at xAI raise questions about who will ultimately assist him in this ambitious venture and whether his recent meeting addressed more inquiries than it answered.
