Could AI make money irrelevant? Elon Musk says the answer may lie in the Sun

Elon Musk has shared his vision for a potentially transformative economic landscape, arguing that traditional currency could become obsolete if artificial intelligence (AI) harnesses vast amounts of energy. In a recent post on X, Musk claimed that if AI systems could capture just one-millionth of the Sun's energy, their computational abilities would exceed the combined intelligence of humanity by over a million times. Musk emphasized the monumental implications of this energy capture, stating that it would necessitate the construction of extensive industrial infrastructure beyond our planet. He proposed that solar panels and radiators could be manufactured on the Moon and launched into space using a 'mass driver,' an electromagnetic system designed to propel materials without the need for conventional rockets. Furthermore, Musk speculated that before we reach such advanced AI capabilities, the global economy might experience a fundamental shift. He suggested that conventional money could lose its relevance, with mass and energy taking precedence over dollars in economic transactions. This reflects Musk's belief that energy and computational power are the true bedrocks of productivity. His comments also resonate with the Kardashev Scale, a theoretical framework created by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev, which categorizes civilizations based on their energy consumption. The ability to utilize even a small fraction of the Sun's power would signify a dramatic leap from current energy usage, demanding technologies and infrastructures that are still beyond our reach today. As governments and tech companies pour resources into artificial intelligence development, Musk's ideas spark discussions about the connection between AI capabilities and energy resources. While the view that computing power and energy drive AI advancements is widely accepted, Musk's prediction of an economy without money remains speculative for now. Currently, traditional currencies continue to underpin global finance. However, Musk argues that the rise of superintelligent AI and our capacity to harness substantial energy could ultimately redefine wealth, shifting the focus from currency to the fundamental elements of mass and energy.
