Elon Musk says AI has taken hard work out of coding, predicts shift in tech jobs

Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, has forecast a transformative shift in the landscape of coding jobs, attributing this change to the burgeoning capabilities of artificial intelligence. He suggests that the introduction of AI has significantly alleviated the monotonous aspects of software development, hinting that programming may soon be approached as a leisure activity akin to painting. In a recent response to OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Musk expressed his views, stating, "AI has taken a lot of the drudgery out of writing software. But, in the fairly near future, writing software will be like being a painter: In the old days, you needed a professional painter to spend many days just to make one selfie (formerly known as a portrait) just so people could know what you looked like! Now, you can make a video selfie instantly & effortlessly." He emphasized that while traditional painting persists, it has shifted from necessity to recreation. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI who later distanced himself from the organization, has since launched his own AI venture, which has integrated with the social media platform X. xAI's Grok AI chatbot competes with established names like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude in the rapidly evolving AI sector. The focus on coding within generative AI has intensified, with numerous startups beginning to unveil comprehensive AI solutions for programming tasks. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced its Codex AI agent, aimed at revolutionizing software engineering with cloud-based solutions. Meanwhile, Microsoft launched GitHub SparkAI, a tool designed to create applications through natural language commands. In a similar vein, xAI has recently rolled out Grok 4code, an advanced coding assistant that supports over 20 programming languages, allowing developers to seamlessly integrate coding into their editors. This tool not only aids in writing and debugging but also offers explanations in plain language, further enhancing the programming experience.
