During a recent all-hands meeting at xAI's San Francisco headquarters, Elon Musk expressed optimism regarding the future of his artificial intelligence venture. Musk conveyed to employees that if the company can navigate the next two to three years successfully, it is poised to surpass its competitors. According to sources familiar with the meeting, Musk emphasized that xAI's capacity to scale its power and data capabilities would play a crucial role in the pursuit of superintelligence, which aims to exceed human intelligence. Musk indicated that the company might achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), which matches or surpasses human cognitive abilities, potentially as early as 2026. Previously, he estimated a 10% chance of xAI reaching AGI with its upcoming Grok 5 model, set for release early next year. Musk also pointed out that xAI holds a significant advantage over other AI firms, with access to annual funding ranging from $20 billion to $30 billion, alongside synergies from his other businesses. Notably, Tesla has already integrated Grok into its vehicles this year. Throughout the meeting, attendees noted Musk's positive demeanor regarding the company's advancements, with one insider describing the atmosphere as "peppy." Musk also shared his visionary thoughts on establishing data centers in space and his ambitions for Mars colonization, suggesting that Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot could one day operate these extraterrestrial facilities. Previously, Musk mentioned that Optimus could assist SpaceX missions as soon as next year. The concept of space-based data centers has been echoed by other tech leaders, including Google’s Sundar Pichai and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, though Pichai acknowledged such endeavors as ambitious. When approached for comment, xAI responded with an automated message stating, "Legacy Media Lies." In the past year, xAI has rapidly expanded its data center operations under the project name Colossus. The company reported having around 200,000 GPUs and aims to escalate this number to 1 million. As one of several companies in the race for AGI, xAI faces stiff competition from established giants like OpenAI and Google. The race to develop AGI remains intense, with OpenAI recently entering a state of emergency to expedite the launch of its latest model. Google has also introduced a new Gemini model, while xAI continues to roll out updates for Grok. During the all-hands meeting, xAI leaders showcased enhancements to existing products, including the Grok Voice app for Tesla owners, featuring improved outcome predictions, enhanced listening capabilities, and new video editing tools.
