Ahead of SpaceX IPO, Elon Musk addresses ASML employees as part of push into chip manufacturing

In a significant move as SpaceX prepares for its historic IPO, CEO Elon Musk addressed ASML employees during a virtual fireside chat at the company's annual technology conference. ASML, recognized as Europe’s most valuable corporation, plays a pivotal role in chip manufacturing, which is crucial for Musk’s ambitious plans. Musk highlighted the strategic partnership that is expected to develop between SpaceX and ASML, particularly in light of the upcoming Terafab chip fabrication facility in Texas. The Terafab project, which Musk announced in March, is estimated to require a staggering investment of between $55 billion and $119 billion, with ASML's advanced extreme ultraviolet lithography machines being essential for the production of cutting-edge chips. As SpaceX seeks to enhance its capabilities, the demand for chips is increasing, particularly following recent agreements to provide computing power to tech giants like Google and Anthropic. However, Musk's address was not without controversy; some ASML employees voiced their concerns on internal platforms, criticizing Musk's political engagements and suggesting that his presence conflicted with the company's values. Despite these challenges, ASML continues to play a critical role in the global semiconductor landscape and is expanding its operations in Eindhoven, with a new campus set to debut in 2028.
