Elon Musk says SpaceX has only committed to a 180-day compute agreement with Anthropic

Elon Musk has emphasized the importance of understanding the details surrounding SpaceX's recent agreement with Anthropic. In a post on X, Musk stated that SpaceX has only entered into a 180-day leasing arrangement for the Colossus supercomputer, rather than a long-term commitment. This agreement includes a mutual cancellation option after 90 days, highlighting the temporary nature of the deal. The clarification comes after SpaceX's S-1 filing revealed a potentially lucrative arrangement with Anthropic, which could yield over $40 billion if maintained until May 2029. The document indicated a $1.25 billion-a-month contract for compute access from SpaceX's Colossus data centers. However, Musk's comments suggest that while Anthropic may have planned for long-term payment, SpaceX has not guaranteed the supercomputer's availability for years. Musk's post also hinted at SpaceX's broader ambitions beyond its traditional space ventures. He noted that the company is not just focusing on rockets and satellite services, but is also positioning itself as a significant player in AI infrastructure. He further warned Anthropic that should SpaceX's own AI projects, including xAI and Tesla's autonomous initiatives, require additional computing power, adjustments may need to be made. "We won't leave them hanging and will provide a reasonable off-ramp," Musk assured, but also indicated the possibility of reclaiming the compute resources if necessary.
