Elon Musk recently took a jab at Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, after Suleyman highlighted the extensive labor hours involved in constructing the company’s new data center. Suleyman drew an ambitious comparison, noting that the Fairwater data center in Atlanta has consumed over 15 million labor hours, in stark contrast to the Empire State Building, which was completed in just 7 million hours. In a post on X, Suleyman stated, "For comparison, the Empire State Building took 7 million," prompting Musk to respond, "Are you sure you’re doing it right?" This exchange underscores the competitive tension between Musk and Microsoft, particularly in the realm of AI development. Musk's own venture, xAI, showcased its efficiency last year by establishing a data center equipped with 100,000 liquid-cooled NVIDIA H100 GPUs in a mere 19 days. NVIDIA's CEO, Jensen Huang, praised Musk’s engineering acumen, stating, "As far as I know, there's only one person in the world who could do that; Elon is singular in his understanding of engineering and construction." The rivalry between Musk and Microsoft has deepened since the emergence of ChatGPT in late 2022. Musk has openly criticized Microsoft's role in OpenAI, even filing a lawsuit that claimed Microsoft's backing turned OpenAI into a "closed source de facto subsidiary." In a surprising twist, Musk collaborated with Microsoft during the Build 2025 event to launch his Grok 3 AI models on the Azure AI Foundry platform. Despite this partnership, Musk has expressed concerns about Microsoft's continued support of OpenAI, warning that it could be detrimental to the tech giant. He described Microsoft's investment in OpenAI as "insanely suicidal." Additionally, Musk is preparing to launch a competing company named Macrohard, which aims to replicate Microsoft's work using AI technologies. He believes it's feasible to simulate Microsoft's operations entirely with AI, as they do not manufacture physical hardware. The centerpiece of this new venture will be Grok AI, further intensifying the competition in the AI landscape.
