Elon Musk reveals why AI won’t replace consultants anytime soon

The rise of artificial intelligence has sparked widespread discussions about its potential to displace human jobs, particularly within the realm of consulting. Recent insights from The Wall Street Journal indicate that McKinsey, a leading global consulting firm, is undergoing significant changes due to AI's capabilities to perform tasks traditionally handled by consultants in a fraction of the time. This growing concern about AI's impact has become a focal point at McKinsey, with board meetings frequently addressing the implications of the technology. Bob Sternfels, the firm's global managing partner, revealed that they are rapidly integrating thousands of AI agents to assist with various tasks, including the creation of PowerPoint presentations, note-taking, and synthesizing interview data. Kate Smaje, a senior partner spearheading McKinsey's AI initiatives, expressed her belief that these developments are critical for the future of the consulting profession. "Do I think that this is existential for our profession? Yes, I do," she stated. However, in a counterpoint to the prevailing concerns, Elon Musk, CEO of xAI, suggested that AI would not fully replace consultants. He noted that many consultants are often utilized to validate decisions that executives have already considered, providing an objective viewpoint and a fallback in case things go awry. Responding to the Wall Street Journal's findings on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk commented, "Some say that the main reason corporate CEOs use consultants is to have an ‘objective third-party’ confirm the decision they were going to make anyway and have someone else to blame if it goes wrong. AI can’t replace that yet." Musk's xAI is also known for its AI chatbot, Grok, which competes with other prominent AI solutions like ChatGPT and Claude. Recently, Grok has faced scrutiny over controversial outputs but has since undergone updates to rectify these issues. Musk has been highlighting a new feature of Grok that allows users to generate videos from text prompts, similar to offerings from other tech giants like OpenAI and Google. As AI continues to evolve, the debate over its role in consulting and other sectors remains vibrant and complex.
