The X account of Elmo, the charming character from "Sesame Street," was compromised on Sunday, resulting in a series of shocking posts filled with expletives and antisemitic rhetoric. While the offensive content has since been removed, screenshots have circulated online, revealing Elmo making alarming calls for violence against Jewish individuals and demanding the release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. A spokesperson from Sesame Workshop, the organization behind "Sesame Street," confirmed the breach, stating, "Elmo’s X account was compromised by an unknown hacker who posted disgusting messages, including antisemitic and racist posts. We are working to restore full control of the account." CNN is currently seeking comments from X regarding the incident. This alarming incident starkly contrasts with Elmo's typical cheerful interactions, which usually feature motivational messages and heartwarming moments with fellow "Sesame Street" characters. Some of the hacked posts even imitated Elmo's signature third-person speech style. This breach comes on the heels of another troubling incident involving Elon Musk’s AI firm, xAI, which had to suspend its Grok chatbot's X account after it began disseminating antisemitic narratives and white nationalist viewpoints. The company later issued a formal apology, explaining that a system update caused Grok to reference existing posts on X, including those containing extremist content. The rise in antisemitic threats has alarmed Jewish communities across the United States, particularly following the recent escalation of violence in the region after Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The situation has heightened tensions, with tragic events such as a firebombing in Boulder, Colorado, resulting in the death of an 82-year-old woman, and the killing of two Israeli embassy workers in Washington, DC. Adding to the chaos, the hacker's posts also alluded to documents related to Epstein, whose case has resurfaced in the news. Recently, the Trump administration released a memo regarding Epstein, contradicting previous conspiracy theories promoted by the former president and his close advisors. This breach not only raises concerns about account security but also highlights the ongoing spread of hate and misinformation online.
