Activist investor Elliot takes a $1B stake in Pinterest, betting on AI-driven growth

Elliott Investment Management, a prominent activist investor, has secured a substantial $1 billion stake in Pinterest, marking a significant escalation of its involvement with the social media platform. The investment was first initiated in 2022, but the recent announcement, made on Tuesday, signals a renewed commitment to driving Pinterest’s innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence. CEO Bill Ready expressed optimism regarding this financial endorsement, viewing it as a strong affirmation of Pinterest's strategic direction in AI. "We achieved record revenue in 2025, experienced unprecedented user growth over ten consecutive quarters, and recorded more than 80 billion monthly searches, all while innovating in visual search technologies powered by AI," Ready stated. He added that he looks forward to collaborating closely with Elliott as Pinterest embarks on its next growth phase. In conjunction with this investment, Pinterest plans to repurchase shares of its Class A common stock through an accelerated $1 billion buyback agreement. This capital injection will also support an expanded $3.5 billion share buyback program, aimed at bolstering shareholder value. Following the announcement, Pinterest's stock price surged by 6% in premarket trading. Despite this positive momentum, Pinterest has encountered significant challenges recently, including a decline in stock value over the past year, disappointing earnings reports, and layoffs affecting 15% of its workforce. The company also faces increased competition from AI chatbots, which have impacted its advertising business. However, Elliott's investment reflects confidence in Pinterest's turnaround strategy, particularly its aggressive focus on AI. Recent developments include the introduction of AI-driven visual search capabilities, enabling users to take photos or select images for instant recommendations on similar items, home decor, and fashion ideas. AI is also being harnessed for personalized suggestions, enhanced content moderation, and creative advertising tools. It is important to note that Elliott's involvement may lead to intensified scrutiny of Pinterest's operations. The firm has a history of advocating for cost reductions and strategic shifts, often seeking leadership changes to enhance company performance. A notable example includes Elliott's influence at eBay, where it drove cost-efficiency measures and a refocus on core operations, culminating in the sale of eBay's StubHub and Classifieds divisions.
