Eli Lilly reaches $2.75 billion deal with Insilico to bring AI-developed drugs to the global market

In a landmark agreement, U.S. pharmaceutical powerhouse Eli Lilly has partnered with Hong Kong-based Insilico Medicine to bring AI-driven drugs to the global market, valued at an impressive $2.75 billion. The deal will see Insilico receive an upfront payment of $115 million, with additional funds tied to various regulatory and commercial achievements, along with future sales royalties, as announced by both companies. Insilico has made significant strides in drug development, having created 28 drugs utilizing generative AI technology, with nearly half already advancing to clinical trials. Alex Zhavoronkov, the founder and CEO of Insilico, highlighted the company's recent public debut in Hong Kong and noted that its stock has surged by over 50% this year. Zhavoronkov acknowledged Eli Lilly's strengths in certain AI aspects, mentioning their unique integration of biology, chemistry, and automation under one roof. As part of the collaboration, Insilico will become a member of Lilly's Gateway Labs, enhancing biotech innovation. The partnership builds on a prior AI software licensing agreement established in 2023. Andrew Adams, Lilly's group vice president of Molecule Discovery, emphasized the partnership's potential to explore innovative mechanisms and expedite the discovery of new therapeutic candidates across various diseases. He described Insilico's AI-enhanced discovery process as a significant complement to Lilly's clinical development efforts. Recently, Eli Lilly's CEO David A. Ricks participated in a prestigious forum in Beijing, shortly after announcing a $3 billion investment plan for China over the next decade. Despite the country's revenue accounting for just under 3% of Lilly's total last year, the company is committed to growing its presence. Insilico's AI development takes place outside of China, in Canada and the Middle East, while they conduct early preclinical drug development in China, leveraging their advanced AI research. Zhavoronkov remarked on the advantages of AI in not just speeding up research but also in synthesizing molecules more efficiently than traditional approaches.
