In a surprising turn of events, General Motors has reported selling 4,508 electric Hummer trucks and SUVs in the United States during the second quarter, nearly matching the performance of Ford’s F-150 Lightning despite a significant price difference. This uptick in Hummer sales is part of a remarkable quarter for GM's electric vehicle (EV) division, marking one of the few automakers to witness a genuine increase in year-over-year U.S. EV sales, according to recently released figures. GM's impressive performance included sales of 17,420 electric Equinox SUVs, 3,056 electric Silverado pickups, 6,549 Blazer EVs, 1,810 Escalade IQ EVs, and 1,524 electric GMC Sierra trucks. Additionally, GM’s commercial EV segment, BrightDrop, also made strides, selling 1,318 electric vans in this quarter, a notable increase from just 490 in the same period last year. Overall, GM's EV sales soared by 111% despite the discontinuation of the Bolt EV and EUV, with the growth largely fueled by the introduction of new models. In stark contrast, Ford has faced challenges in the electric vehicle market, reporting a 31% decline in U.S. EV sales for the second quarter of 2025. This downturn was primarily driven by a significant drop in sales of E-Transit vans and waning interest in the F-150 Lightning. Despite an overall increase in sales due to aggressive employee pricing strategies, Ford's total electric vehicle sales for the year stand at just 38,988, marking a nearly 12% decrease compared to last year. The landscape for electric vehicle sales in the U.S. has become increasingly difficult, especially with the looming threat of the Trump administration potentially revoking federal tax incentives and subsidies. Hyundai has also reported declines in its successful Ioniq line, with Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 sales down by 12% and 8%, respectively. Kia has experienced even steeper drops in sales for its EV models. Ford's Mustang Mach-E saw a year-over-year sales drop of nearly 20% in the second quarter, with only 10,178 units sold, while the F-150 Lightning's sales fell by 26% to just 5,842. The E-Transit vans also suffered, with sales plummeting from 3,410 last year to a mere 418 this quarter. The company attributes the drop in E-Transit sales to larger fleet orders being made earlier in the year. As the automotive industry navigates these turbulent waters, Ford is looking to the future with plans for a more affordable range of electric vehicles, including a small truck set to debut in 2027. However, the current situation casts a shadow over the company’s short-term prospects in the EV market.
