Forecasters predict wildfires, floods, severe heatwaves from incoming El Niño

Researchers have raised alarms this week about the potential impact of a developing El Niño, predicting it could exacerbate heatwaves, droughts, and floods throughout the year. However, they caution that the persistent warming caused by fossil fuel emissions remains the primary force driving climate extremes. El Niño represents the warm phase of a cyclical temperature shift in the tropical Pacific Ocean. This phenomenon releases significant amounts of heat stored in the ocean, temporarily increasing the average global surface temperature by up to 0.3 degrees Fahrenheit. During a recent online briefing, scientists indicated that the ramifications of a moderate or strong El Niño today could be far more severe than similar occurrences in the past due to the overall increase in global temperatures. Fredi Otto, a climate science professor at Imperial College London and a leading researcher with World Weather Attribution, emphasized that the current climate system's warmth heightens the risks associated with El Niño. Should this year's El Niño develop as anticipated, it could lead to unprecedented weather extremes not seen during past events. Otto remarked that El Niño events from 2015-2016 and the upcoming 2023-2024 periods have already contributed to record-high temperatures globally. Despite the potential for another spike in temperatures due to El Niño, Otto affirmed that the planet's temperature would continue to reach alarming new heights, primarily driven by human-induced climate change. Since 2014, World Weather Attribution has evaluated the influence of global warming on over 100 extreme climate events, often isolating El Niño's impact to better understand human contributions to these significant weather phenomena.
