Education report calling for ethical AI use contains over 15 fake sources

A recent report on educational reform in Newfoundland and Labrador has come under fire after it was discovered that at least 15 of its cited sources are fabricated. This revelation raises serious questions about the integrity of the document, which advocates for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in educational settings. Titled "A Vision for the Future: Transforming and Modernizing Education," the extensive 418-page report was released on August 28 and aims to serve as a 10-year strategy for revamping the province's educational system. The document was developed over 18 months and introduced by co-chairs Anne Burke and Karen Goodnough, both of whom are professors at Memorial University's Faculty of Education, along with Education Minister Bernard Davis. One particularly notable fake citation points to a nonexistent 2008 film by the National Film Board titled "Schoolyard Games." A spokesperson from the board confirmed the film does not exist. This citation reportedly mirrors an example from a University of Victoria style guide, which explicitly states that many of the references included are fictitious, created solely for illustration purposes. Alarmingly, it appears that someone misappropriated this fictional citation, presenting it as a legitimate source in the reform document. Aaron Tucker, an assistant professor at Memorial University specializing in the history of AI in Canada, expressed his concerns about the integrity of the report. After extensive searches through the MUN Library and various academic databases, he noted that many of the cited sources could not be verified. Tucker remarked, "The fabrication of sources at least begs the question: did this come from generative AI?" He highlighted that the creation of fictional citations has become a persistent issue since the advent of AI language models. Such fabrications pose significant risks in academic and legal contexts, as they can easily evade detection by human reviewers due to their seemingly accurate formatting and contextual relevance.
