Schools are training kids to follow in AI's footsteps — pushing them toward a 'life of hurt,' says a VC-turned-educator

Ted Dintersmith, a former venture capitalist and now an education reform advocate, has raised alarms about the current state of the U.S. education system. He argues that schools are presenting students with inadequate choices: costly college degrees or low-paying jobs, while automation and artificial intelligence are taking over many roles that once provided meaningful employment. In an interview, Dintersmith described the education system as not only outdated but also detrimental to students' futures. He believes that graduates are being produced who resemble 'flawed, expensive versions of ChatGPT'—trained merely to memorize and follow instructions, rather than to cultivate skills that machines cannot replicate. This approach, he warns, could lead to a rough transition for Generation Z into the job market, as they are being equipped to perform tasks that AI is already handling more efficiently. Dintersmith emphasizes that the education landscape could be transformed for the better. He highlights successful examples, such as the Emil and Grace Shihadeh Innovation Center in Winchester, Virginia, which combines traditional academics with hands-on vocational training. This model allows students to gain practical experience in fields like carpentry and health sciences, helping them make informed decisions about their futures, whether that involves pursuing higher education or entering the workforce. However, he points out that such innovative models remain exceptions in a system that still prioritizes standardized test scores in subjects like math and reading, often neglecting vital skills such as critical thinking and collaboration. Dintersmith advocates for a significant shift in educational focus—from standardized assessments to opportunities that foster creativity, purpose, and problem-solving abilities. As high school graduation looms for many young people amid a rapidly evolving job market, Dintersmith's message is clear: "Either get proficient in AI or step aside." He elaborates on these ideas in his upcoming book, "The Aftermath," set for release in December, where he critiques how current educational practices often overlook essential math literacy needed for success in an AI-driven economy. Dintersmith warns that this issue transcends mere economics; it poses a significant societal challenge. He urges educators and policymakers to adopt a mindset akin to that of historical leaders preparing for crucial battles, stressing the urgency of making transformative changes in education. If the system fails to adapt, he fears that countless young adults may enter a world without viable job prospects, leading to broader societal repercussions. "We need to approach this with the seriousness it demands, or we risk losing the world as we know it," he cautions.
