As screen time continues to escalate globally, with adults averaging over six hours a day on devices, concerns about eye health are on the rise. Prolonged exposure to screens can lead to a myriad of issues, including eye fatigue, dry eyes, blurred vision, and even worsening nearsightedness. Addressing these challenges, South Korea-based startup Edenlux is set to unveil its latest wellness device, Eyeary, in the United States. Founded by Sungyong Park, a former military physician who experienced temporary paralysis of his eye muscles, Edenlux's mission is personal. Park’s journey to regain his vision spurred him to create technology aimed at helping others manage and enhance their eye health in an increasingly digital world. Edenlux's Eyeary is designed to serve as a daily visual recovery tool and is set to launch on Indiegogo by the end of March. Unlike traditional medical devices, Eyeary falls under the FDA's wellness category, allowing it to focus on vision training and general eye health without the stringent regulations of medical device classification. The company's first product, Otus, was launched in 2022 and has already generated $10 million in revenue. Eyeary promises to be a more user-friendly option, potentially reducing the time needed to lessen reliance on reading glasses from 12 months to just six. This new device not only resembles conventional eyewear but is also lighter and more comfortable, featuring a lens system with 144 diopter focal points for precise focusing and improved eye muscle training. Eyeary connects to a mobile app via Bluetooth, enabling users to track their usage while Edenlux collects and analyzes data to customize training programs using AI. Recognizing the impact of excessive screen time on eye health, Park explained that the ciliary muscle, which controls the lens in the eye, can weaken from overuse. Edenlux is committed to addressing the root causes of vision problems linked to digital device overuse. The company has ambitious plans for expansion, with additional products targeting specific eye conditions already in development. Edenlux recently secured $60 million in Series B funding and has established a U.S. subsidiary in Dallas for final assembly of its devices. The startup is also exploring potential collaborations with major tech companies like Apple and Samsung to integrate its innovative technologies into smartphones, signaling a new era in consumer health technology focused on eye and hearing wellness.
