ED probes Meta, Google over Ads for illegal betting platforms

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued new summons to senior officials from Meta and Google after they missed a scheduled appearance related to a money laundering investigation involving illegal online betting platforms. As reported by official sources, representatives from both companies sought to postpone their appearance originally set for July 21, citing the need for more time to collect relevant documents. The ED granted them a one-week extension, now requiring them to appear on July 28 for questioning. This investigation, conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), is centered on the promotion and advertising of unauthorized gambling services on digital platforms. Investigators are delving into how these illegal betting entities managed to advertise on the major social media networks and digital ecosystems managed by Meta and Google. The ED aims to formally record statements from company representatives to determine their awareness and involvement in facilitating the visibility and monetization of these gambling platforms. The agency is scrutinizing various digital platforms that have allegedly hosted or promoted links to illegal betting services. Concerns have been raised about multiple platforms defrauding users and laundering significant sums of money while evading taxes amounting to crores of rupees. Additionally, several celebrities, influencers, and sports figures associated with these platforms are reportedly under investigation, with summons expected to be issued to them soon. Among the notable cases being examined is the Mahadev Online Book (MOB) app, allegedly run by individuals in Chhattisgarh, which is accused of extensive financial fraud and money laundering activities. Currently, neither Meta nor Google has issued a public statement regarding the ongoing investigation. The ED is actively pursuing over a dozen significant cases related to online betting and gambling, amid rising concerns about their unchecked growth in India’s digital landscape.
