Jobs report, Gap's weather problem and more: Morning Squawk

As Friday dawns, the financial landscape is buzzing with anticipation ahead of the release of February's jobs report, set to be unveiled at 8:30 a.m. ET. Investors are bracing themselves for potential volatility, as stock futures are currently trending downward following a tumultuous trading day. The ongoing tensions related to the U.S.-Iran situation have left many wondering whether yesterday's market sell-off will continue or if a recovery is on the horizon. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones predict that the jobs report will reflect an increase of 50,000 positions for February, with the unemployment rate expected to remain stable at 4.3%. Despite these projections, concerns linger about the true state of the labor market, described as 'stable' thus far this year. However, as noted by CNBC's Jeff Cox, much of the job growth last year was concentrated in the healthcare sector, raising questions about the overall employment landscape. In the retail sector, Gap Inc. is facing challenges following severe winter storms that disrupted operations during the holiday quarter. The company reported a miss on earnings expectations, resulting in a more than 8% drop in its share price during premarket trading. This setback contrasts sharply with Costco's performance, which exceeded expectations in its latest financial results. The wholesale giant has also indicated plans to reduce prices contingent on potential refunds from the recent Supreme Court ruling on tariffs. Furthermore, legal disputes are heating up as attorneys general from multiple states have initiated a lawsuit against President Trump, aiming to challenge his administration's recent global tariffs. They argue that these tariffs violate constitutional and statutory guidelines regarding tariff consistency. In response, White House representative Kush Desai affirmed that the administration intends to defend these tariffs vigorously. Lastly, in a noteworthy political shift, President Trump has announced the appointment of Sen. Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma to replace Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, following controversy surrounding Noem's claims of Trump's approval of a significant immigration enforcement ad campaign. Despite this personnel change, Democrats remain firm on their position regarding funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which has faced budgetary challenges in recent weeks.
