
A recent firmware update has significantly restricted the offline capabilities of Echelon's smart home gym equipment. As highlighted in a blog post by Roberto Viola, the developer of the QZ app—which connects Echelon machines to popular fitness platforms like Peloton, Strava, and Apple HealthKit—this update now mandates a constant Internet connection for the machines to function effectively. One user has reported that after updating his equipment, he can no longer sync with apps such as QZ and is unable to access exercise metrics through the Echelon app without being online. The updated Echelon machines are said to require an active connection to Echelon’s servers to utilize essential features, including real-time metrics sharing. Viola expressed concerns about this change, stating, "Because updated Echelon machines now require a connection to Echelon servers for some basic functionality, users are unable to use their equipment and understand, for example, how fast they're going without an Internet connection." He warned that if Echelon were to cease operations, users could find their gym equipment rendered inoperable. Viola, who began receiving reports of issues related to QZ just before the end of 2024, noted that the latest firmware update, which seems to have been rolled out to Echelon bikes this month, has compromised QZ functionality. Despite reaching out to Echelon for comments, there has been no official response. In his blog, Viola urged Echelon to enable its machines to send encrypted data to devices like smartphones or tablets without needing an Internet connection. He stated, "Users bought the bike; they should be allowed to use it with or without Echelon’s services." While not all Echelon users rely on QZ, many may find themselves affected by the limitations imposed on their machines when offline. This situation underscores the growing concerns over companies altering product functionality after consumers have made their purchases.
