Number of suspected Ebola cases falls by hundreds as testing ramps up

Recent response initiatives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have led to a notable decrease in the estimated number of Ebola cases, with hundreds of instances being ruled out through intensified testing. According to a representative from the World Health Organization (WHO), the DRC is currently reporting 437 cases, which include 321 confirmed and 116 suspected instances. This figure marks a stark contrast to the previous count shared by the WHO, which on Friday indicated a total of 1,041 cases, comprising 135 confirmed and 906 suspected. The director-general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Jean Kaseya, had also suggested in an op-ed over the weekend that there were over 1,100 suspected cases. In addition, the number of confirmed deaths has been revised down to 48, a significant adjustment from the WHO's earlier report of 241 deaths, which included 18 confirmed and 223 suspected fatalities. WHO representative Christian Lindmeier elaborated on the decrease, stating that many of the previously suspected cases have been reassessed and found to be suffering from other illnesses or have merely experienced fever without additional symptoms. The suspected cases were identified among individuals who sought medical care and exhibited symptoms commonly associated with Ebola, starting with general flu-like indicators. In a contrasting update, Uganda has reported an increase in its Ebola case count, confirming six new cases linked to previous infections. This brings Uganda's total to 15 confirmed cases, including one death.
